Cost of Divorce

The cost of a divorce will depend on the complexity and number of disputed issues in your case. Many people think that the more assets or income the parties have, the more a divorce will cost. This is not necessarily true. We find that the total cost of a divorce depends on how reasonable the parties and lawyers are and how well the divorcing spouses can compromise with one another to reach resolutions on disputed issues.

We offer a variety of fee structures. The most common are standard and flat-fee structures:

Standard Fees

A standard fee is one in which the client pays a retainer and is billed at a specified hourly rate. The more work required by the divorce lawyer, the higher the cost; the less work required by the lawyer, the lower the cost. The retainers and hourly rates depend on the experience and skill of the lawyer assigned to a particular matter. We offer a wide range of price points for standard fees. Most clients select a standard fee.

Flat Fee

A flat-fee option gives a client certainty; it specifies that a specific sum will be paid for all services performed in a case, regardless of the time the lawyer takes to perform the services.

A flat fee is not offered in every case or with every lawyer. An in-depth analysis of a case will be performed before agreeing to a flat fee. Some of our competitors offer “flat” fees that aren’t truly flat fees at all—it’s a flat fee that turns into a second flat fee, which then turns into a third flat fee, and by the time you’re done, you’ve paid a lot more than you bargained for!

Because we believe a flat fee should remain flat, we are careful in our case assessments and the expectations we set with our clients before entering a flat-fee arrangement.

After a brief discussion about the issues you’re facing, our experienced Milwaukee divorce lawyers can give you an accurate and transparent estimate as to how much a Wisconsin divorce case will cost.
