Distracted Truck Drivers

Last month was Distracted Driving awareness month. Truck driver distractions, in particular, can cause catastrophic accidents, and there may be any number of reasons why such accidents occur.

One recent study determined that in the United States, approximately sixty percent of motorists, use their smart phone at least once a day while operating a vehicle. There are thousands of accidents every year due to distracted driving. Many of those accidents involve truck drivers who drive while being distracted.

According to a report by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA),  seventy percent or more of all accidents happen as a result of complex activities that are not related to operating a vehicle. Distracted driving is at the top of the list. There may be many reasons why so many truck driving collisions involve distracted drivers.

  1. One of the chief reasons may be sheer exhaustion. Truck drivers spent a considerable amount of time on the road and probably lack adequate sleep. This clouds their reaction time or in some cases, they be actually dozing off or sleeping behind the wheel.
  2. Use of smart phones is another common distraction, not just of truck drivers, but of all motorist on the road. Texting is particularly dangerous. Any time you take your eyes off the road and concentrate on something else, even if it is just for split seconds, exposes risk both to you and others on the road.
  3. Reaching for objects. Fumbling around in your vehicle for a pen you dropped on the floor, changing radio stations, looking for your sun glasses in your glove box, also involves taking your eyes off  the road.
  4. Distractions outside of the vehicle. Looking at another accident as your drive by, or a fancy sports car as it drives by you also, while it may only be split seconds, is enough to involve losing control of the vehicle or hitting another vehicle while you turn your head.
  5. Eating or drinking while driving is equally distracting. When you stop off to order food and start drinking a coke, having your french fries with catsup on the seat, your holding a hamburger and driving all at the same time, you are inviting disaster.

Don’t drink and drive.

Don’t text and drive.

Don’t talk on your smart phone and drive.

Don’t eat or drink while driving.

Don’t reach for object in your car.

Don’t take your eyes of the road.

Be vigilant in operating your vehicle. Your life and other motorists lives on the road, depend on your being 100% alert and eyes on the road at all times.
