Nursing Home in GA being sued for a patient’s death caused by Scabies
I read the other day a news clip about a horrific case of nursing home negligence/abuse out of Georgia. The case arises out of Lafayette, Georgia, where a nursing home resident, who died from a scabies infestation, is believed to have been eaten alive over the course of several months or years.
According to a lawsuit filed by the deceased’s family, Rebecca Zeni died in 2015 from scabies at the facility. Following her death, an autopsy was done which showed the cause of death as “septicemia due to crusted scabies.” Apparently, state health officials were notified about the scabies outbreak at the nursing home several times, but did not inspect the nursing home facility.
If you are asking yourself, what is Scabies, it is a parasitic infestation, and can affect more than 130 million individuals world wide. Scabies are mites that spread via skin to skin contact with an infected person, or by sharing bedding, clothing, or towels with an infected person. Irrespective of personal hygiene, a scabies infestation can occur when mites burrow under the surface of the skin and cause an allergic reaction.
The decedent was originally moved into the nursing home facility back in 2010 due to dementia. The pathologist conducting the autopsy estimates that there were hundreds of millions of mites living inside the body at the time of her death, and doesn’t think it is an exaggeration to basically say that essentially she was eaten alive causing her a very painful death.
According to health records obtained, the department of public health was notified of a scabies outbreak at the nursing home both in 2013 and 2015, before her death. The report also shows that in 2015, at least 35 nursing home residents and staff were exposed to scabies. Instead of doing a personal on site inspection, officials with the department sent a manual to the nursing home on how to treat scabies. Just 11 days after receiving the manual, the nursing home patient died.
